Wedding Ring Finger

The wedding finger is the fourth finger located between the middle finger and the little finger. In some religions the wedding ring is worn on the left-hand ring finger and in others it is on the right hand. The ring finger is known as digitus medicinalis, the fourth finger, digitus annularis, digitus quartus, or digitus IV in anatomy and Third Finger.

A large part of the community, especially the Romans, believed that a vein of blood ran directly from this finger and into the heart. The vein is called the "vena amoris" or the vein of love. Tradition states that the wedding ring finger is also the same finger people wear their engagement rings on.

Western Culture: According to the western culture, a wedding ring traditionally worn on the fourth finger of the left hand is called the ring finger. In the UK, most of women wear their engagement ring on top of their wedding ring because it means that the wedding ring is placed on the finger first. Hence, superstition states that the wedding ring should never be taken off. In Greek Orthodox Culture, the bride wears the ring on the left hand during the function and then changes it to the right hand's fourth finger after the wedding.

Non-Western Culture: Rings are not necessary for a traditional Indian wedding. However, modern society has adopted this ring ceremony into their culture. In Sinhala and Tamilians cultures, the man wears the wedding ring on his right hand, and the woman wears it on her left-hand ring finger.

In West and South Asia, rings are normally worn on the right hand by men and women's left.

Muslim wedding rings are worn on the right finger by the groom, and on the left finger by the bride.

In a traditional Jewish wedding function, the ring is placed on the women's right hand, but of late they also wear it on the left hand.
