Buttalu is the Telugu name jhumkas. Jhumkas are inverted, conical shaped hanging earrings that are strung on a stud. They are available in many designs and patterns. The classic shape of the traditional Buttalu is that of a spherical inverted cup hanging on a pure stud, but nowadays Buttalu designs have evolved to incorporate various sizes and shapes suitable for the modern Indian woman.
Jhumka or Buttalu has a typical shape that looks stunning on any woman. These are available in designs ranging from simple to elaborately carved models. Casual occasions demand beautiful and simple jhumkas, whereas special occasions like weddings demand large stone-studded jhumkas that would look amazing with heavy attires. There are so many assorted styles of jhumkas that are studded with pearls, diamonds and semi-precious stones. Indian women love their jhumkas, be it jhumkas from the east, west, north or south. All of these have their beauty, the jhumkas from the North have Polki or Kundan work, whereas the jhumkas from South are mostly in pure gold and can be found studded with stones or diamonds. Even though jhumkas have undergone several transformations over the decades, the classic and simple dome-shaped Buttalu will never go out of fashion. They will remain an integral part of the Indian culture.
