ORNAMENTS OF STRENGTH AND STORIES OF TRIUMPH

ORNAMENTS OF STRENGTH AND STORIES OF TRIUMPH
02 Oct 2025

With the fading monsoon and arrival of a quiet chill, the devotional spirit awakens and a sacred energy takes over the land. Lamps lit all across the homes and the dhols and dance filling across the air suggests the arrival of Navaratri, the nine nights of devotion and celebration. The tenth night of Dussehra unfolds to rejoice the win of good over evil. Dussehra also known as Vijayadashami not just celebrates the victory of gods over demons, but of clarity over confusion, light over illusion, and truth over fear.

This is the day when Goddess Durga is said to have slayed Mahishasura and when Lord Rama stood victorious against Ravana. But more than a myth Dussehra is a message, a mirror and a moment to look inward and appreciate the battles you have fought this year.

And during this entire festivity, our tradition speaks through rituals and the beauty we wear. All across the homes, rituals are performed, prayers are offered, and people dress in festive clothing. Among these rituals, the act of adornment holds a special place. Whether it’s an ancestral jewellery passed down through generations or a newly chosen gem, more than an accessory it becomes a part of the celebration.

Besides beauty, women go for jewelleries that hold meaning and memories to adorn themselves. A pair of jhumkas to complement the silk attires or bangles circling their beautiful wrists are silent markers of time, memory, and cultural continuity.

The maangtika placed with intention, the necklace adorned close to the heart and the choker that frames the neckline, adds grace and elegance to the tradition. Some wear heavy temple jewellery reflecting their heritage, often as a tribute to the divine.  Even though many today may choose a simple diamond ring or pendant to celebrate the moment in a more modern language, the spirit of the celebration remains unchanged. Each piece of jewellery worn during this festival carries a story, a blessing, and a connection to tradition.

The gold jewelleries shine with brilliance symbolizing wealth, success, and good fortune. From bracelets that clasp the wrist with quiet elegance to rings that gleam like tokens of inner strength, even the smallest ornament including a delicate pendant or a simple stud carries the power of intention, not about grandeur but about grace.

Also, these moments are not just about honouring the tradition. Each moment, like mothers helping daughters fasten necklaces, sisters borrowing bangles, grandmothers opening old jewellery boxes are heirlooms of emotion and tradition. It becomes a silent witness to laughter shared, blessings received, and prayers whispered with closed eyes, carrying  the energy of the moment, storing the spirit of Dussehra like keepsakes of light.

This Dussehra, may your celebration be wrapped in light, tradition, and beauty. May the jewellery you wear not just decorate you, but remind you of strength held, battles won, and the prosperity that lies ahead.

Happy Dussehra!
