Vasant Panchami: Amber Dreams Wrapped in Gold

Vasant Panchami: Amber Dreams Wrapped in Gold
23 Jan 2026

There comes a time in India when the colour yellow takes centre stage. Giggling children dressed in the sunshine-hued clothes flitter around their homes. Elders adorned in elegant shades of cream and gold wait for the start of something new. Welcome to the wonderful festival of Vasant Panchami – a day that calls for you to wear your favourite jewellery while paying homage to the divine.

Vasant Panchami marks the advent of spring and new beginnings. It is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music and arts. The festival is closely associated with  yellow, which is  one of her favourite colours. As families come together to celebrate, homes glow with warmth and tradition. Women are radiant in their finest jewellery and ethnic wear. Sisters swap gold bangles, mothers wear their favourite earrings, and fathers make a note of their daughters’ preferred jewellery styles to gift them when the time is right.

In Uttarakhand, family members gather to decorate their front doors with fragrant yellow blooms. The gentle chime of gold bangles and bracelets moving on women’s wrists becomes part of the day’s rhythm. Children run excitedly as they search for their books that are to be offered before the deity for her blessings. Mothers lovingly replace their young daughters’ stud earrings with dangling jhumkas, add gold pendants and dress them in vibrant, festive clothing.

As with all festivals in India, jewellery is an integral part of the celebration. A necklace or a gold choker accentuated with a yellow gemstone can elevate even the simplest outfit. Married women layer their favourite jewellery pieces, along with their mangalsutra. Gemstone rings set in complementary colours are excellent options to add a subtle flourish to the whole festive look.

In Punjab and Haryana, Vasanth Panchami arrives with gentle weather and blue skies perfect for kite flying. Adults and youngsters gather with childlike excitement as they prepare for the festival. Women favour hoop earrings, gold bracelets and bangles that move effortlessly to match the day’s rush and energy. Families gather on their rooftops to view the amber skies filled with colourful kites.

The eastern half of India is where the festival truly shines. Across West Bengal, grand pandals rise in honour of Goddess Saraswati. Children offer their books, pens, and instruments for blessing during the pooja. The celebration is extended to schools as well, where you’ll find the most well-dressed kindergarteners this time of the year – with cheeks plump from sweets, eyes brightened with a touch of kajal, and some wearing tiny maang tikkas to stand out. Teachers also embrace the spirit of the festival by sporting floral motif jewellery that elevates their simple and elegant clothing as they join students in seeking blessings for the year ahead.

Vasant Panchami invites us to celebrate learning, creativity, and personal growth. The jewellery we choose becomes part of the stories we hold dear. So take the time to explore jewellery that not only celebrates your heritage but also inspires you. Let the season mark the beginning of renewed prosperity and the continuity of the traditions that hold meaning for you.

Happy Vasant Panchami!
