Nagapadathali

Nagapadathali

Kerala, also known as God's own country, always stands out when it comes to its traditional way of life. Even though it is considered as one of the states with the most modern lifestyles, people always have a special place for conventional ways, especially when it comes to occasions like weddings. Along with Kerala's most preferred traditional outfit -Kasavu sari, the ornaments are also well-known for their beauty and elegance. The 'Nagapadathali' is one such ornament, which is a must-have for a bride when it comes to getting ready for her wedding.

The Nagapadathali is a long neckpiece with motifs shaped like the snake's hood attached to it. The word 'Nagapada' means "snake's hood", hence the name. These pendants are very pretty, and only specially trained master crafters make each of them. Each motif is made in gold and encrusted with precious stones like emeralds or rubies. It is similar to the 'Palakka mala', an ornament with leaf pattern motifs.

According to traditional belief, these stones signify prosperity and wealth and are considered to be a perfect choice for the bride. The Nagapadathali is usually worn in the outermost layer. It goes best with Kerala's traditional Kasavu saree. Its royal elegance adds to the entire bridal look.

Each jewellery piece adorned by the beautiful bride has its own story to tell.

Ornaments like these make a woman look like a goddess on her special day, and thus outshine everything around her.
