A necklace is a vital ornament that pretty much every woman owns. Irrespective of whether a woman is a novice or a connoisseur of jewellery, she loves this beautiful piece as it always helps her pull off any look that she desires with an added elegance to her neck. The plethora of options available for women while purchasing a necklace is immense. Especially when it comes to the Indian jewellery market, choosing a suitable necklace for any occasion is an arduous task owing to the diversity in our country, which paved the way for regional antique designs.
One such heritage necklace design of India is the Guttapusalu.
Guttapusalu is a loopy necklace design that owes its origins to the pearl fishing coastal areas of the Andhra region. The necklace is designed with strings of beads attached in fringes which appear like a shoal of small fish, and hence the name (in Telugu, ‘gutta’ refers to a group of fish and ‘pusalu’ means bead). This is further embellished with patterns to adorn the base area of the necklace. A guttapusalu necklace can be found in any length and make. These are traditionally made in metals of gold or silver along with beads, ornate stones or pearls to border the lining, and are available in the form of chokers, matinee necklaces, and even long version necklaces.
The most famous make among Guttapusalu necklaces is the temple design ranges with stones, 22K gold with pearls and beads, and uncut diamond sets. The same design has been extended to include matching pairs of earrings, bangles and waistbands to either form a complete jewellery set or as standalone pieces.
Being an antique jewellery piece, the Guttapusalu design is considered highly auspicious and wearing the necklace as part of bridal jewellery has always been a regular trend, especially among Telugu brides.
Nonetheless, Guttapusalu designs are not considered ‘only traditional’ anymore. We have many women who effortlessly pull off a trendy chic look with lightweight guttapusalu designed necklaces as well.
