Since gold is ubiquitous and has always been in demand, we are in need of an accepted unit for measuring this metal. Units of measurement are significant for trading, be it any commodity. Gold has been measured in ‘thola’ (also known as tola or tolah) since ancient times. Thola is primarily a Hindi term, and is used in India and some other Asian countries. Currently, one thola is equal to ten grams of Gold. In other words, the exact measurement of one thola would amount to 180 troy grains (11.6638038 grams) or 3/8 troy ounces. The word thola (or tola) has been inspired from the Sanskrit word ‘tol’ which means ‘to weigh’. This word comes from a time when everything, like food, grains or seeds, was weighed in ‘thols’. Thol is less likely to be used by the public because respective metric units have replaced thol a long back.
