BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. It is a nationalized body that came into existence in 1987 through an Act of Parliament. BIS manages various activities like standards formulation, hallmarking, certification of products, testing and calibration scheme etc. BIS's certification is a means for providing the guarantee of quality, safety, and reliability of products to the buyers.
BIS certification offers many benefits to the licensees (such as using ISI mark on certain products), ensuring that the items are quality products.
BIS Certification and Hallmarking for Jewellers
In India, the BIS provides hallmarking for precious metals like gold and silver. Hallmarks are official symbols used in many countries to guarantee the purity or fineness of precious metals.
Jewellery hallmarked by the BIS will have the BIS official logo on it. The logo indicates that the BIS tested the purity of ornament in one of its licensed laboratories.
BIS grants a license for a particular premise if one completes all the requirements and guidelines provided on BIS's official website. The application process for the license includes document verification, fee payment and signing the agreement. After receiving the license, the business has to follow all the terms and conditions in the agreement.
BIS certified jewellers can hallmark their jewellery from any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres. The consumers who buy ornaments also can test the purity of hallmarked jewellery from any of the BIS Recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Such centres undertake the testing of samples on priority on a chargeable basis.
