Tanzanite
The name ‘tanzanite’ comes from Tanzania, the country of the stone’s origin. It is only in northern Tanzanian minefields situated just at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro that Tanzanite stones can be naturally obtained.
There are a wide range of options available in jewellery incorporating tanzanite gemstones. Tanzanite studded pendants, earrings, bracelets, and rings are very popular. These often come in simple yet exquisite designs and when coupled with white metals, give a high illuminating effect. Hence, more prevalent pieces of jewellery include ornaments made of tanzanite stone along with white gold, platinum, and sterling silver.
Sometimes, the tanzanite stone is coupled with smaller diamonds to provide an outlining effect, which enhances the sparkle of the ornament. Tanzanite gemstone is assessed based on 4 Cs- Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut. It weighs in Carats, where 1 Carat is 200mg and may have colours ranging from vivid to pale blue, depending on the intensity of the blue and violet shades in it. The value of the stone is directly determined by how deep the colour of Tanzanite is. In normal light, Tanzanite appears to be amethyst violet and after processing may vary from deep blue to bright purple. The amount of inclusions in the stone determines its clarity, and the proportions along with its symmetry decide the cut. Lower compositions give higher clarity while higher proportions and symmetry paves the way for higher sparkle, thus signifying a higher cut.
The very uniqueness of Tanzanite lies in the fact that it displays multiple colours when viewed from multiple directions. Hence, when used in ornaments, these beautiful stones give different hues of blue, purple and burgundy, all at the same time and enhance its sparkle.
