Amethyst Stone

Amethyst Stone

Amethyst is a semi precious gem belonging to the quartz family. The color of an amethyst stone can be anything ranging from a light pinkish-violet to a deep purple. Amethyst stones have a glassy lustre. They may be transparent to translucent in appearance. Mohs scale rates them at number 7, which means they are high on hardness and are scratch resistant. Amethysts are therefore used for carving ornamental masterpieces. Amethyst stones are found in abundance in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, South Korea etc. The largest open cast amethyst vein is assumed to be one kilometre in length, and is situated in Maissaw, Lower Austria. Apart from the natural stones, lab-grown amethysts are also popular due to their cheap prices. The finest amethyst comes from Africa and South America.

The price of amethyst stones depends upon their color, cut, clarity and carat. Amethysts with a transparent deep purple hue are the costliest amethyst stones. The posh purple color of amethysts has helped them secure a place even in royal crowns. Common men adorn this purple beauty in the form of rings, pendants, necklaces, brooches, earrings etc. A wide variety of decorative pieces studded with this stone are available. These bring an element of royalty and antiquity to our homes. The Greeks used to wear jewelry made of amethyst stones. Amethyst stones are extremely beautiful and should be taken care of properly. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may fade their color.
