Pearl Jhumkas

Pearl Jhumkas

Jhumkas are India's traditional earrings; they mostly come in a bell shape, crafted in different designs to suit different face shapes and outfits. It is a part of the famous traditional temple jewellery, usually used to adorn the deities. The dancers, who perform “Bharathanatyam” or “Kuchipudi”, often wear them as ear ornaments along with the head ornaments Chutti and Maatal. Later Jhumkas in Gold became accepted among the brides as well as it is an heirloom piece of jewellery and can be inherited from the mother or grandmother. It has remained highly in demand for long, imbibing the changes made on its designs by different cultures inhabiting India. It is named ‘jhimki’ in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, ‘Buttalu Magar’ in Andhra Pradesh, ‘Muthina Vale Jhimk’ Karnataka, ‘Jhumar’ in Rajasthan and ‘Kundal’ in Haryana, showing the widespread acceptance of these ornaments throughout India. Traditional Golden Jhumkas, Silver Oxidized Jhumkas, Diamond Jhumkas, Pearl Jhumkas, Kundan Jhumkas, Terracotta Jhumkas, Meenakari Jhumkas, Kashmiri Jhumkas, Hoop Jhumkas and Ear cuffs Jhumkas are some of the important types of Jhumkas.

Pearl Jhumkas are one of the classic styles in the ornament, which is popular and preferred by most. The Pearls are thought of as the drops of dew that fell into the moonlit sea as per Hindu folklore and as the tears of the Goddess of love Aphrodite, as per Greeks. Since Pearl is the birthstone of people born in June; it is considered ideal for Gemini people.

It is freshwater Pearls that are mostly used in Jhumkas. The value of the Pearl is determined by the size, colour, symmetry, smoothness of surface, with lustre attaining prime importance. Large Pearls are rarely encountered and are hence just as expensive.

The type of Pearl Jhumkas to be worn should ideally be determined according to the occasion on which it is intended to be worn. The Nandini and Nadiya type of Pearl Jhumkas are simple designs suitable for traditional and western wear outfits. The Zahira Jhumka and the Aarohi Flower Jhumka should be worn with western wear to get rid of the overtly ethnic charm of previously narrated Jhumkas.

The Kartyayni Jhumka design is best suited for marriage functions, while the Kavni Jhumka and Punita Jhumka are mostly preferred with sarees and anarkalis.

Detachable Jhumkas will help a great deal as the stud can be detached from the dangling part and can be used as a stud for other daily wear jewellery or attached with the dangling part of other earrings suitable for parties.

Customised Jhumkas are also available, fulfilling the gold Karat demands and quality of Pearls employed in the making of the Jhumka.
