When a sand grain or other foreign particles enter into the molluscs namely Pearl oysters, it is trapped inside the mantle of the mollusc and covered with a mixture of Aragonite and Conchiolin to form nacre or the mother of Pearl. The layers around the particle, increase in size eventually and thus a Pearl is formed.

The lustre of Pearl is dependent on the arrangement of the Aragonite. Natural pearls are rare, occurring in saltwater. Most of the Pearls currently sold are Cultured Pearls from Pearl oysters mussels.
