Matilu Designs

Matilu is the traditional ear chain that finalises the perfect look of the bride in South India. The same ear chain is referred to as “Matti” in Malayalam. This ornament is also worn by the dancers performing Kuchipudi or Bharatanatyam.

It is attached to the earring, covering the ear and is fixed to the hair. This hair accessory also supports the heavy Jhimukka and imparts a complete look to the bride.

Matilu designs are simple and beautifully crafted. A Matilu is usually short in length, and it enhances the beauty of the bride, especially her long braided hair, beautifully decorated with jasmine flowers. It will be sure to complement the bridal costume as well, which is typically a Kancheepuram saree as it gives a perfect South Indian look.

Matilu designs usually come in 18k and 22k. The Martiz or an over-the-ear chain is another form of Matilu which essentially consists of a Gold chain adorned with Rubies or Emeralds having a karat weight of 22k.

The Matti is another type of earchain; 18 k gold adorned with Pearls which imparts a lustrous look to the accessory.

Matilus are preferred mostly by young ladies as it suits western as well as traditional wear. Women also wear them during social gatherings.

Champaswaralu is also a form of Matilu; considerably longer than a Matilu, which is embossed with decorative beads and pearls. They may be multi-layered, and the ear chains from both ear studs are extended to the back of the head where they are clipped together. In this case, the Gold chains are embellished with beads, Pearls and Kundan work. The Chempaswaralu designs come in 22k North Indian as well as South Indian styles.
