Rajputi Nath
The famous Rajputi Nath is a traditional nose ring, known for its beauty and elegance. It is traditionally worn by the Rajput women and is heavily studded with pearls and gemstones. This ornament consists of a sizable hoop-like nose pin attached with a long chain pinned to the hair. The hoop that covers the lips is known as nath. When compared to other nose rings, the Rajputi nath is heavy and is crafted by specially skilled designers.
Rajputi Nath has always been a favourite among Indian women for ages. The tradition of wearing nath is believed to be associated with the Hindu religion.
The word 'nath' is derived from the word 'naath' meaning husband, making it a symbol of marriage among the Rajput people. It is said that during the first night of their wedding the husband removes the nath- 'nath utarna' of the bride, ending the virginity. Because of this widows are not allowed to wear nath.
The beauty of the Rajaputi nath is represented in 15 to 17th century Rajput paintings. The well-known Indian miniature painting 'Bani Thani' is an example of this.
