Brahmin Thali ( Mangalsutra) is the holy chain worn by a married woman. This ornament is traditionally known as Mangala Sutra. It is worn as the main ornament attached with a gold chain or a yellow thread at the wedding knot. Brahmin Thali designs vary in different areas of India based on the community's customs and tradition. Since there are different subsections in the Brahmin community across the country, we can see, around fifteen names for the Thaali such as mangalyam, chedi mangalyam, manthrakodi, mangalsutra, thirumangalyam, bottu, nallapusalu, taagpaag, tanmaniya minnu, hiru maangalyam, dehjoor etc.
Before the times, most of the Brahmin communities have been following heavy and elaborated Mangala Sutras. There are a wide variety of designs in Brahmin Mangalsutra including hand crafted ,merchanized and uncut moulds.
The Hindu God or Goddess idol designs like Shiva Linga, Saraswathi, Om Ganesha, Lakshmi, Anna Lakshmi, Lord Sundareshwara and other prosperity symbols sun, tulsi and moon are also used in Brahmin Thali designs.
Brahmin Thali is available in gold, silver, diamonds and platinum metals. Vintage styles and antique model thalis are also widely used. Western style and statement models like American gold, Singapore designs and precious stones from western countries give more style and stunning appeal to the Thali designs. It also uses gold, white and red beads.
