Mangalsutra Meaning

Mangalsutra Meaning

The word Mangal sutra is derived from the word “Mangalsutram” in the Sanskrit language; the meanings of “Mangal” and “sutram” being “auspicious” and “cord” respectively. It is a representational depiction of the duo being brought together on the auspicious occasion of their marriage to an eternal affiliation till their death.

In North Indian marriages the Mangalsutra is made of black beads with two pendants; the black beads are believed to protect the bride from any evil eyes by acting as an auspicious amulet.

In South Indian marriages the groom secures the Mangal sutra around the bride’s neck with three knots. The three knots represent the trustworthiness to the husband, the commitment to family, and consecration to God.

The Mangalsutra is also believed to possess medicinal benefits. The Mangalsutra made in Gold, worn in close proximity to the heart is said to have a beneficial effect on heart health and functioning and also entices cosmic waves from the exterior. It also stimulates the surya nadi and provides liveliness by regularising the blood flow, making her fresh. It also boosts the immune system.
