The evening twilight lit up the entire courtyard with an enthralling shade of orange. Too many things were happening, it just feels surreal. Seemed only yesterday I was teaching her to ride her bicycle on these very grounds. Her little voice screeching \u201cAppa, keep holding the cycle, don\u2019t leave me! Don\u2019t leave me!\u201d is still echoing in my head. A bittersweet smile crosses my face.\u00a0Oh Ammu, time is so unfair. It is already time for you to leave.<\/em>\u00a0I fight back tears and look around. The hustle and bustle around me is overwhelming. There\u2019re Srinath and Jeeva setting up the Manavarai in the middle of the courtyard. They do know their little cousin\u2019s obsession with perfection, especially for her big day. Their chithi as usual is fussing over them with a tray of juice. On one side her twins are practising their dance routine for the Sangeeth while on the other end, our all in all Murugan is digging a hole for the pandhakaal(a long bamboo pole with turmeric,kumkum,flowers and mango leaves tied on top, erected during auspicious functions)<\/p>\n

\u201cAppa, move please\u201d. It\u2019s Arjun. He\u2019s dragging out the pandhakaal. \u201cHey don\u2019t drag it. Let me give you a hand.\u201d I said. We promptly take it out and set it upright in its hole.<\/p>\n

\u201cAppa I got a call from maapillai\u2019s house. They are on the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOk, I\u2019ll ask your mom to finish up dressing up her daughter. Give her an entire day and it still wouldn\u2019t be enough time for her! Wonder what she\u2019s going to do for the Muhurtham tomorrow! Ha-ha!\u201d<\/p>\n

As I head into the house the twins come running to me. \u201cPeriappa, Paati wants to see you. She\u2019s in the kitchen!\u201d Anamika said while running out.<\/p>\n

\u201cOk,sure. Don\u2019t run around the house you two! You\u2019re going to hurt yourself! And wash your hands, Aakansha!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a hurry Periappa. We are yet to rehearse one more song!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOk do it soon. Maapillai\u2019s family will be here soon!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cO my God! Ok Periappa! And don\u2019t worry; we keep using hand sanitizer all the time!\u201d They ran off. Looking for an empty room to practise I hope.<\/p>\n

I enter the kitchen and the smell of the assortment of sweets and payasam arouses my hearty appetite. \u201cOh Amma! Your hands are doing magic. I am hungry just by smelling it all!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are not for you! It\u2019s for my\u00a0chellakutty<\/em>, Anjali.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNooooooo! Ha-ha-ha. Pamper her all you want Amma! Anyway why did you want to see me?\u201d I asked breathing in the delectable aroma around the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to confirm the Muhurtham timings with you. Lunch can be ready by noon. When will all the rituals from Maapillai\u2019s side finish?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c Muhurtham is between 11.00-12.30 tomorrow morning. So, we can be ready to serve accordingly.<\/p>\n

By the way Maapillai is arriving in a few minutes. Have you made his favourite masala dosa for dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course! Specially made for him!\u201d she said, her toothless smile inspiring me as always.<\/p>\n

I walked into Anjali\u2019s room and there she was. My beautiful baby girl has already become a bride. Her smile could light up the deepest of caves. My chest is swelling with pride as I look at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh good! You\u2019re here! Appa tell me, does this Lakshmi Haram match with my Muhurtham sari?\u201d<\/p>\n

As I look over her head, in comes my lovely wife, carrying the box that we\u2019d bought yesterday. \u201cI think it\u2019s time\u201d she said, mimicking my proud smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes! We think this would be lovely if our beautiful daughter wears it. We\u2019re so proud of you Ammu!\u201d I said, my voice brimming with pride.<\/p>\n

We hand\u00a0the box of necklace<\/a>\u00a0over to her. Her eyes glow in surprise and happiness as she looks at the necklace we bought for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so beautiful!\u201d she breathed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you manage to do this during the lockdown?!\u201d the astonishment in her voice is really amusing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you say all the time, your appa is your Superman!\u201d<\/p>\n

She hugs me sweetly.\u00a0I am going to miss you, my dear!<\/em>\u00a0A bittersweet melancholy fills my heart.<\/p>\n

Just then a flash goes off and startles me.<\/p>\n

\u201cPriya! You gave this old man a fright!\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s my daughter\u2019s best friend since childhood. They have been inseparable for most parts of their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cUncle! These are candid moments. Just wait! Once I show it to you, you\u2019ll want to frame it and keep!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s so true Appa! During school and college, our farewell photos were all taken by Priya only. Each picture could tell a story!\u201d<\/p>\n

Arjun\u2019s voice shouting \u201cMaaplai\u2019s car has come!\u201d reverberated till our room. As we all bustled to welcome them at the front gate, I couldn\u2019t help but feel content that despite not being able to celebrate my little princess\u2019s wedding with utmost grandeur, this cute intimate homemade celebration gives me solace. All her favourite people are around her, wishing her a lifetime of happiness.
