Vasant Panchami marks the advent of spring and new beginnings. It is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music and arts. The festival is closely associated with\u00a0 yellow, which is\u00a0 one of her favourite colours. As families come together to celebrate, homes glow with warmth and tradition. Women are radiant in their finest jewellery and ethnic wear. Sisters swap gold<\/span> bangles<\/span><\/a>, mothers wear their favourite <\/span>earrings<\/span><\/a>, and fathers make a note of their daughters’ preferred jewellery styles to <\/span>gift<\/span><\/a> them when the time is right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Uttarakhand, family members gather to decorate their front doors with fragrant yellow blooms. Married women layer their favourite jewellery pieces, along with their mangalsutra. In Punjab and Haryana, Vasanth Panchami arrives with gentle weather and blue skies perfect for kite flying. Adults and youngsters gather with childlike excitement as they prepare for the festival. Families gather on their rooftops to view the amber skies filled with colourful kites.<\/span><\/p>\n

The eastern half of India is where the festival truly shines. Across West Bengal, grand pandals rise in honour of Goddess Saraswati. Children offer their books, pens, and instruments for blessing during the pooja. The celebration is extended to schools as well, where you’ll find the most well-dressed kindergarteners this time of the year \u2013 with cheeks plump from sweets, eyes brightened with a touch of kajal, and some wearing tiny <\/span>maang tikkas<\/span><\/a> to stand out. Teachers also embrace the spirit of the festival by sporting floral motif jewellery that elevates their simple and elegant clothing as they join students in seeking blessings for the year ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n
